BIOGRAPHY
Several years ago four friends from Augusta Georgia got together to perform one of the greatest rock albums of all time, Murmur by R.E.M. Calling themselves M.E.R.M.E.R, they went on to perform other earlier R.E.M. albums including Chronic Town, Fables of the Reconstruction and Reckoning. Why? Because R.E.M. was the biggest influence on them. Drummer Brian Brittingham was a long time member of In Like Flynn, Joe Stevenson and John Kolbeck both were in People Who Must and Alex Wier was in Atlanta based Alt. Rock Band Sasquatch. If not for the early years of R.E.M. all four members of M.E.R.M.E.R would not have ever played music. When performing, they play a mix of the early IRS years (mostly Chronic Town through Document); although they do not try to visually imitate their heroes, they pay close attention to sounds created by R.E.M.'s Dark mumbling lyrics, the jangle of the Rickenbacker guitar and the drive of Mills bass lines and Berry's drumming. Basically the guys just have fun playing some of their favorite tunes while drinking a few beers. That's what it's all about!
